Working With A Makeup Artist

Early in my career, when I was starting fashion photography, I didn’t have much experience on how things worked with female models. I thought women just show up to a photo shoot with their hair and makeup done and you just photograph them. Boy was I wrong!

One of the first female models that i photographed asked me if i had a makeup artist. Being totally inexperienced at the time, I asked her: «What’s a makeup artist?» We chatted online and she explained to me what a makeup artist does.

Here’s some facts:

-As a photographer, when you work with a makeup artist, you look more professional

-Not all women know how to apply makeup (or they do it incorrectly)

-A makeup artist can also make the model feel more relaxed and comfortable before the shoot by creating small talk to make her less nervous

-Also, some makeup artists can also do different hair styles on a model for a photoshoot

From experience, not all makeup artists are created equal. Some are good, some are bad and some need more practice. Some makeup artists show up on time and some are always late for a photoshoot, which is totally unprofessional in my opinion.

Please note: You get what you pay for (or don’t pay for). Some makeup artists offer to work for free to build their portfolio, but expect to be disappointed. They will either cancel last minute or their work totally sucks. Makeup artists that charge too little may not be good either.

Minimum price you should pay for a makeup artist is $50. Maximum price is $150. Depending on her experience, if she does hair also and is willing to stay the entire day at the studio with you during a shoot and can be an assistant.

Here’s the final result. Photoshoot with my model, Shrabani.
